LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS (Lower Back Pain)

It affects mainly the lower lumbar vertebrae,  the pathology almost similar to that of cervical spondylosis. The patient experiences chronic pain in the lower back region. This happens due to compression of the intervertebral disc which can also lead to displacement of the vertebral bodies.

Examination

Inspection:

  • Conformity to the normal shape of the thoracolumbar spine; an S-shaped curve.
  • Presence of any local projections.
  • Angular deformity of the spine.
  • Patient stands with a rigid and flattened spine.
  • The whole trunk is shifted forwards on the hips.
  • If the trunk is tilted to one side, it is called scoliosis or sciatic tilt.
  • A concave lower back (lordosis) thrusts the hips forward.
